AOP Red - Languedoc - Pézenas
Production area
It is a triangle of 24 Kms on each side, whose apex points towards the South .On the eastern side of it, the river Hérault flows down from North to South .To the North , the Terroir is sheltered by the Montagne Noire and to the South West , it is the extension of the Béziers area . The altitude ranges from 0 to 300 meters above sea level ..and you can come across vineyards at all altitudes .
Climate
The climate in the Pézenas terroir is mediterranean type and is quite dry . It is indeed less affected by sea influences compared to the Terrases de Beziers and Grès de Montpelleier areas and is less continental than the Terrasses du Larzac region . The average rainfall level is around 700 mm per year . Temperatures are very similar throughout the area -This gives a certain climatic homogeneity to this terroir .Summers are hot , winters are mild and temperature variation can easily amount to 40 °C throughout the year .
Types of soils
The appellation area offers a large variety of soils , therefore providing great originality to the wines there . However we can divide the area into 3 main types of soils : schists , limetone and silts with important volcanic formations that are the undeniable and unique links between the villages. They shape a part of the landcsape with remains of vulcanoes, basalt flows , consolidated ashes and screes ( black gravels) that mingle with soils of other origins .
